New Year, New Songs

Next week a new EP will officially be released called “Every Precious Failure”. This is a collection of songs that either didn’t fit on the Exits + Onramps album or the one I’m currently working on.

The single from the EP is “Lowell” which is about the very rough and disappointing time I experienced living in Ypsilanti for about a year. You can listen to it above or all the usual places.

That’s that

The recording is done and the CD’s (more than I know what to do with) were shipped to me. Of course even though the work producing it is done the work of promotion has just begun. You can stream the whole album here:

Speaking of promotion, am 1700, a radio station based out of downtown Ypsilanti Michigan was kind enough to recently feature Taking Root as the song of the day on their station. I encourage you to check em out, they have a lot of interesting programming.

This is the “lead” single from the album Exits and Onramps. When I wrote it about three years ago, I was going through a really difficult time, as I was moving from somewhere I had lived for 18 years.

The day I was moving was in early October and I was sitting on the porch getting ready to leave. In front of me was the maple tree in the front yard, depositing seeds as it does every fall, thickly covering the ground with those “helicopter” type seed pods.

It occurred to me that despite the large amount of seeds, few if any would actually do anything besides lie on the concrete and dry out. I realized that growing up and leaving home felt a lot like that to me, that I was heading into the world with no gaurantee that I would find somewhere else where I felt I belonged.

Out of habit I would pick up the seeds and crumble them apart, especially the wings. On that day though it didn’t seem right.

The Journey of Making an Album

I’ve been working on a collection of songs for quite a while, recording sporadically the last two years in a basement. The songs date back as far as eight years ago, so they’re long overdue for a proper release.

Originally I just wanted to make an album without a cohesive theme but the more I worked with the songs the more it became apparent that they were linked together. Not only thematically but musically as well.

The title is a reference to the last song, and in a way life. So often in life we are in a state of transition; either leaving or arriving somewhere. To quote the band Nada Surf: “all I feel is transition, when do we get home?”
